FIRST IMPRESSIONS BY ELIZA LUTZ

Published in SICK issue 5, 2023

“Printmaking is a medium that works both in concert and in conflict with my experience of chronic illness. Both are tedious and require infinite patience. But printmaking’s laborious nature is also at odds with my body, exacerbating symptoms that make the repetition and precision of the discipline uniquely challenging. This friction directly informs my practice as I explore the visibility vs. invisibility of chronic illness through both the process of making and the content of my work. I incorporate embroidery as an expression of the body’s relationship with the built environment, connecting the places where internal experience and external perception meet.
First Impressions is a series that reimagines the US accessible parking placard to better encapsulate the fluidity of the disabled experience, not just between different people, but within individuals themselves.”

Eliza Lutz is an artist, graphic designer, and musician based in New Mexico, USA. Working primarily as a printmaker, painter, and songwriter, their work explores the dissonance between one’s internal and external worlds, and the relationships between trauma, chronic illness, disability, and time.
